Army Veteran
Anna Makela
Anna is homegrown in the Washington, DC Metro Area leading to the completion of two Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Biology from the University of Maryland. In true Marylander form, she stayed in the state after college and worked at the National Institutes of Health as a biochemist before commissioning as an officer in the US Army to attend medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Science.
She is a proud US Army veteran who served as an adult psychiatrist during her military career. Anna’s service to the United States generously provided her the opportunities for education and training which, in turn, privileged her to provide the highest level of medical care to service members, their families and veterans throughout the world.
Recently, Dr. Makela’s continued resiliency and curiosity took her back to medical training at a public health hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic and national emergency, where she completed a Harvard Medical Fellowship in consultation liaison psychiatry.
Anna enjoys volunteering her time teaching psychotherapy through a non-profit organization, organizing community engagement events for other veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project as a Peer Leader volunteer, and serving as the first vice president of her local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
A desire to create innovative solutions in healthcare and patient education brought Anna to the Dog Tag Bakery Fellowship. She looks forward to being involved in a supportive environment with cohesive camaraderie while learning the foundations of running a sound business.
Anna’s favorite desserts include snickerdoodles and mohnschneken.
