Born in a suburb of Toronto, Angela Carlson graduated high school in Canada before earning her Bachelor of Environmental Studies and working as a geographer and map drafter for Environment Canada. When the field work wore her down, she pursued a second Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and then taught elementary school in Hong Kong, Okinawa, and the United States for seven years.
Angela always enjoyed baking, and in conjunction with one of her husband’s deployments, she returned to school a third time and achieved an A.A. in baking and pastry arts. Since cakes don’t lose their homework, Angela decided to transition from teacher to baker, and she worked at various hotels until her twin sons were born.
She met her husband while teaching overseas and has been part of the Marine Corps family for more than 20 years. Angela thoroughly enjoys being a mom, volunteering at her children’s schools, and helping other military spouses through the Marine Corps Family Team Building network. She continues to bake in her free time and makes retirement, birthday, and specialty cakes on request.
Now that the boys are teens, Angela chose to apply to the Dog Tag Fellowship Program to learn what it would take to transform her passion for baking into a small business. She also wants to show her kids that it’s rewarding and important to be a lifelong learner.
Sourdough bread remains Angela’s favorite baked good.
